Jim Smith of Ozark, Missouri, is a familiar face on the vintage trailer circuit, and his trailer—affectionately named “Derel”—is just as recognizable. A Fireball model that he and his wife Stephanie restored themselves, Derel has become a standout at rallies, drawing attention for both its craftsmanship and personality.

From the moment it rolls into camp, Derel makes an impression. The trailer’s bold Fireball identity is hard to miss, especially with its solar-powered Fireball sign glowing proudly above the scene. It is the kind of setup that invites people to stop, take a closer look, and strike up a conversation.

Part of the fun is in the details. One of the most talked-about features is Jim’s creative use of Fireball whiskey bottles turned into LED lights. It is a clever and fitting touch that adds both character and a bit of humor to the display. As Jim likes to joke, collecting the bottles required a bit of commitment—“a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.”

Derel has made appearances at rallies across the region, including a recent showing at the Branson KOA vintage rally. Alongside the trailer is Stephanie, Jim’s wife of 40 years, who is often part of the display and the story. When asked about her, Jim is quick with a smile and a line: “No, that’s not a professional model—that’s my trophy bride.”

While the exterior draws a crowd, the interior reflects the thoughtful work that went into the restoration. The original bold color scheme of red, orange, and yellow has been replaced with a more subdued palette of three gray tones, giving the space a clean and updated look while still maintaining its vintage feel. Practical upgrades were also part of the plan. The original stove has been replaced with a microwave, and the electrical system has been modernized with 30-amp service and multiple 12-volt branch lines powered through a converter installed during the rebuild.
Much of the trailer itself has been brought back to life, with more than 80 percent of the wood replaced during the restoration process. The result is a trailer that blends solid craftsmanship with personal style—built to be used, enjoyed, and shared.

At its core, Derel is more than just a restored trailer. It is a reflection of the time, effort, and creativity that Jim and Stephanie put into the project. Whether it is the glowing lights, the custom touches, or the stories that come along with it, this Fireball continues to live up to its name, bringing energy and attention wherever it goes.
