This blog post takes us back to the very first issue of Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine in 2011, when the publication was printed on newsprint. Featured on the cover of that milestone issue was Tim Mackinaw’s stunning 1953 Superior, a trailer that captured attention with its timeless charm and unique story. As we revisit this iconic trailer, we’re sharing the original article that introduced it to our readers, along with the history and details that made it such a standout.
I’ve looked at a lot of trailers. I like a lot of trailers. I have even bought a few I liked! Something about this trailer and these photographs grabbed my attention. Last year, in preparation for the annual vintage camper trailer calendar, I asked Facebookers and subscribers to my free newsletter to submit photos. Tim Mackinaw obliged me by sending the photo you see on the cover. When it came time to mock up the new VCT publication, I remembered that great photo. After laying out the cover and using the image to promote the first issue, I ran with it! Tim graciously provided us with additional photos of his 1953 Superior. The trailer has since been sold, but it is the one that helped get the magazine started.
To the best of Tim’s knowledge, the trailer is technically a mobile home park model, built in 1953 by Superior of Michigan. Nothing else is known about the company Tim has searched for for 3 years. The trailer is 19’ long, with a 16’ L x 8’ W coach body and 6’4” interior height. It stands almost 9 ‘outside from the ground to stack tops. It features original wall sconces and 90 % of her original birch wood paneling; all her hardware is original, too. Tim installed the period Tappan range as the previous owner had removed the original unit. The trailer features a functional shower. The stall was sanded and repainted, and all plumbing lines were replaced. 5K BTU’s kicking it under the dinette really takes the heat off a summer’s day.
All of the vintage appliances are functional, and, of course, the retro Sunbrella awning has been provided by our friend Marti. (Marti’s Awnings of Chico, CA). Tim bought the trailer in Charlottesville, Virginia, back in July of ‘09. Tim camped in her in Norfolk, VA. Tim’s first time out was to Boulevard Flower Gardens (a plant nursery in Chester, Va.). He has been back several times since. Once, the Superior was at a Red Cross fundraiser. It’s also been used on great evenings right at home; Tim said he lights up a campfire and has a cookout in his yard. But his favorite campground is Bear Creek Lake State Park in Cumberland, Va.
