Rob and Mechelle Merrils are the creative duo behind Trailer Magic, a vintage trailer restoration business that blends craftsmanship, design, and passion. Rob’s expertise comes from years as a licensed finish carpenter, combined with his knack for fixing anything, honed during his upbringing in his dad’s lumber mill in Minnesota. Mechelle, with her art history degree and love for mid-century design, brings an eye for aesthetics and functionality. Together, they’ve restored over 100 trailers since 2017, ranging from frame-up restorations to smaller repairs like window sealing or roof work.
While they’ve tackled iconic trailers like the Spartan Mansion, their true love is “stick and tin” trailers, especially compact canned-ham styles like Field and Stream. Their favorite projects include a 1960 Holiday House with its signature front windows and a luxurious layout featuring a washer, dryer, and spacious refrigerator. Their signature work often involves adding modern conveniences—flush toilets, USB ports, and air conditioning—while preserving mid-century charm.
What sets Trailer Magic apart is their full-service approach. They help clients design trailers to fit their camping needs, source materials, and even assist with interior design, offering personalized touches that make each project unique. This care often leads to lasting friendships with clients, who they frequently see at vintage trailer rallies.
The Merrils are passionate about sharing their knowledge through VCT Boot Camps and take pride in restoring these pieces of Americana. They aim to inspire the next generation of vintage trailer enthusiasts, keeping this vibrant community alive. Whether it’s maintenance, consultation, or a full restoration, Trailer Magic is dedicated to making vintage trailer dreams a reality.
