Description

A New Year, a 75th Anniversary, or a decade in business are all reasons to celebrate. We highlight things like silver anniversaries (25 years), turning 50 years old, and the 20th century. We give reverence to round number milestones and new beginnings. You may have some personal resolutions for the new year, maybe a birthday or anniversary, that you will pay extra attention to because of their number. For us, we will celebrate ten full years of publishing the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine!

The next issue of the magazine is number 60. We will have published six issues a year for ten years in March. You may wonder what each issue’s “Volume” and “Number” represent. When we obtained a periodical mailing permit from the post office, they required us to add these numbers based on the calendar year of business (volume) and the number of publications for that year (number). This issue is Volume 11, Number 1, Issue 59. We started the first 15 issues without the postal permit, so they just had an “Issue” number. We have retained that number for our count.

This year we have also upped our game with our rallies. We are hosting five this year, beginning in March with Camp Munimula. Our rallies are in California and include Trailerfest, Glamperfest, and Boot Camp. We have also added a new late fall this year in Pismo Beach in November. With the blessing of the original wagonmasters and the participation of other trailerites, we are reviving the “Trail Along to Pismo Rally.” You can find all of the details for our rallies and others in this magazine or www.periodevents.com. If you are hosting a rally, make sure to post it on our site and let everyone know about it.

What else may the new year bring? More rallies and events added back to the calendar? Supply lines opening up, making parts and materials more available? Will we see more “vintage” trailers built from scratch as it becomes more challenging to find restorable units? (See page 32). The hobby is filled with industrious, resourceful, creative people. I’m sure whatever comes our way will be met with a can-do attitude and a community of individuals willing to help.

If you are a veteran in the hobby, make it a point to welcome the newbies. Share a campfire or a meal and make them feel at home. We were all there once, and after a dozen years of vintage camping, we are still friends with those that welcomed us when we were new. We have been asked how long we can keep our enthusiasm for old trailers. We figure we are in over a dozen years now, and hope to have at least that many more left in us.
