Karludi’s story began quite by accident nearly five years ago, when Indiana residents Karla and Judi acquired a 1959 Airstream Tradewind from a friend. He had originally picked up the clear-titled trailer at a swap meet, intending to restore it for camping. But after decades sitting in the woods—unused, unplated since 1986, and occasionally occupied by hunters, critters, and rodents—the project proved less appealing at home.

When Karla and Judi first saw the trailer during a visit, they were immediately intrigued. Discovering it was a 1959—the same birth year as Karla—sealed the deal. They had to have it. What they would do with it, however, was another question entirely.
Judi had no experience with camping or trailers, while Karla had grown up camping in everything from pop-ups to diesel pushers. As Realtors, the couple was no stranger to renovation projects—but this would be their first with wheels. Still, their shared love of mid-century design inspired them to dive in.

The first challenge was simply finding a place to keep the trailer. Their home’s HOA restrictions meant it couldn’t be parked on-site, so it spent its early months in storage while they searched the Midwest for a restoration specialist. Eventually, they found a shop in Ohio, where the trailer would spend the next 14 months undergoing a complete transformation.
The vision was clear: preserve the original footprint while creating a one-of-a-kind “1950s martini and wine bar” theme—paired with all the comforts of modern living. The trailer was stripped down to its shell. New plumbing, wiring, insulation, HVAC, and tanks were installed, and the exterior was polished back to life. Once the structural work was complete, Karludi returned home, ready for the custom finishes that would truly bring the vision together.

Today, Karludi stands as a rolling piece of art. High-gloss cabinetry, chrome accents, rich upholstery, and custom lighting come together to capture the essence of mid-century style in a way that feels both authentic and elevated. Every detail reflects thoughtful craftsmanship and a clear design vision.
Karla and Judi now enjoy sharing their creation with friends—often over a bottle of wine pulled from the built-in chiller—after years of curious anticipation about their “crazy” project. Much like a classic car, Karludi is pampered and stored in a climate-controlled space. She may never see the mud puddles of a state park, but with a story like this, you never quite know what the next chapter might bring.
