The Little Shasta That Could

This 1962 Shasta Airflyte has been at the heart of one couple’s adventures, marking the beginning of their journey into the world of vintage trailers. Their fascination with “trailers with wings” began after the wife’s parents purchased an Airstream in 2012. Inspired, the family set out in search of a Shasta and, in March 2013, discovered one in a small rural town in Illinois.

Though the little Shasta was far from pristine—camouflaged and missing its signature wings—the couple had a vision for what she could become. The restoration process was an act of dedication and love: stripping away layers of old paint, polishing aluminum, and driving thousands of screws to bring the trailer back to life. A delightful surprise came when the original decals were discovered tucked away in a drawer beneath the refrigerator, perfectly preserved. On the couple’s wedding day, a final gift from the bride’s parents made the project complete—brand new wings to restore the trailer’s iconic silhouette.

Within a year, the Shasta was campground-ready. From the Smoky Mountains to Mississippi’s Bay Springs Lake and Tennessee’s Dale Hollow Lake, she carried her owners on countless adventures. It was during these travels that the couple discovered the joy of Vintage Trailer Rallies. Their very first rally, held in 2016 at Honeycomb Campground in Alabama, opened the door to a vibrant community of enthusiasts.

Since then, rallies have become a cherished part of their lives. Whether participating in a campground-wide trick-or-treat at Fall Creek Falls or simply gathering around campfires with fellow Trailerites, the couple has found a welcoming community that embraces vintage trailer lovers of every age.

Their Shasta Airflyte, once a neglected find, now stands as both a labor of love and a symbol of new beginnings—proof that with vision, dedication, and a little help from family, a vintage trailer can truly be brought back to its former glory.
