Preserving a Rare ’41 Vagabond

The preservation of this Masonite-sided Vagabond, one of only two known to exist, was so remarkable that it was never restored—only carefully preserved.

The trailer’s story is just as unique as its construction. The original owner purchased it to live in temporarily while building a house. To protect it, he built a shed around the trailer. Other than using the couch to sleep on during construction, the Vagabond was essentially never lived in. When the house was complete, the trailer remained under its shelter for decades, untouched and never exposed to the elements.

Because of this protection, the Vagabond survived in extraordinary condition. It never leaked, never suffered from prolonged weather damage, and retained much of its originality. When the property eventually changed hands, the new owners simply wanted the trailer and its shed removed—leading to its discovery by a passionate vintage trailer enthusiast.

Rather than restore it and erase the decades of history etched into its materials, the new owner made the decision to preserve it exactly as it was found. Today, this rare Vagabond stands as a testament to both its original design and the care that ensured its survival, offering a rare glimpse into vintage trailer history.
