William Ward Studios of Chico, California, has once again brought a piece of vintage Americana back to life with the restoration of this stunning Universal Trailer. Its most distinctive feature—the elegant wraparound “Hollywood Windows”—sets it apart from nearly every other breadloaf-style trailer of its era. These panoramic windows, a signature of the Universal Trailer Corporation, were touted in 1940s advertising as “Hollywood Windows—an exclusive Universal Trailer feature offering a three-direction view for a brighter, lighter living room.”

The Universal Trailer Corporation operated in both Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles, California, during the 1940s. Their designs reflected the optimism and innovation of the time, blending style and comfort in a way that made camping feel glamorous. The wraparound windows weren’t just for show—they flooded the living area with natural light, giving owners a sense of openness that was rare in compact trailers of the period.

Adding to the sense of brightness, this restored model also features back-lit, glass-front overhead kitchen cabinets that beautifully showcase the craftsmanship of the original builders while enhancing the warm, inviting glow of the interior.

William Ward, the craftsman behind this project, is known for his meticulous attention to detail and thoughtful upgrades. He restores one or two vintage trailers each year—carefully selecting unique models to rally with before finding them new homes. This Universal trailer, fully restored to its mid-century charm, was scheduled to be available in the fall of 2019.

Ward’s restorations are not just about preserving history—they’re about making vintage trailers practical and comfortable for modern travelers. Knowing how much buyers appreciate the convenience of an onboard bathroom, he always ensures that his restorations include both a toilet and a shower. While this Universal originally came equipped with a bathroom from the factory, Ward is known to “add” these features to other restorations when necessary, combining authenticity with functionality.

Through projects like this, William Ward continues to bridge the gap between the past and present—celebrating the artistry, innovation, and enduring appeal of vintage trailers while giving them new life on the open road.
