Maiden Voyage: A Family Adventure in Our Restored Shasta Airflyte

Last April, we brought home a dream on wheels—a vintage Shasta Airflyte. After a full year of restoration, countless hours of hard work, and a whole lot of love, we finally hit the road for its maiden voyage. My wife, Penny, our 14-month-old daughter, Lilly, and I set out on a two-week tour of California, covering 1,700 miles. And I’m happy to report—the camper handled it like a champ!

Between the vintage charm of our Shasta and the cuteness of a baby on board, we quickly became the center of attention everywhere we stopped. People couldn’t resist sharing their stories—some reminiscing about childhood camping trips in trailers just like ours, while others were inspired to start their own vintage trailer journey.

The trip carried extra meaning for me because of a family tradition. My dad often told me about the time my grandpa took the whole family on a seven-week, 7,000-mile adventure across the U.S. in their 1950s Aljo camper. My grandpa had even named it “Tag-a-Long” and proudly painted the name on the front. We decided to carry on the legacy by writing “Tag-a-Long” in chalkboard paint on the back of our Shasta, making it official.

Now that we’ve had our first adventure, we’re hooked! This summer, we’re planning to attend a few vintage camper rallies, meet more great people, and continue making memories with our little family.

See you on the road! — Steve, Penny & Lilly Morris
