A Cabin on Wheels: Restoring a 1964 Ideal Trailer

What started as a hopeful find at Trailerfest Vintage Trailer Rally turned into a labor of love for one Tennessee family and their 1964 Ideal travel trailer. While there were moments during the restoration when they felt like throwing in the towel, they pushed through—and the result is a one-of-a-kind camper that blends vintage charm with rugged, outdoorsy character.

The trailer was in rough shape when it was first brought home. The original frame—especially the back end—was so deteriorated that it couldn’t be saved. A local farming fabricator rebuilt the frame from the ground up, giving the trailer a solid foundation for what would become a full-scale rebuild.

Nearly every part of the trailer was either replaced or repaired, including:

  • All paneling and wall supports
  • Plumbing and electrical systems
  • Windows
  • About 60% of the subfloor

Despite the challenges, the family managed to preserve several key original features, including the aluminum siding, sink, stove, countertops, and cabinet doors. A 1960s-era replacement icebox was sourced to match the trailer’s vintage style and complete the kitchen setup.

The finished interior pays homage to the family’s love of the outdoors. With a hunting and fishing cabin theme, the space feels like a cozy woodland retreat. Details like wood accents, rustic textures, and carefully chosen décor pieces help bring the vision to life.

The final touch? A carefully mounted late 1800s J. Stevens double-barrel 12-gauge shotgun, displayed with care and reverence—adding a sense of heritage and storytelling to the trailer’s warm, rustic atmosphere.

This project brought the Harrison family—Willy, Andrea, Tabitha, Jacob, and Nellie—closer together, turning what once felt like a daunting rebuild into a rewarding family accomplishment. Now fully restored, their 1964 Ideal trailer is ready for new adventures and plenty of campfire stories.
