Designed by aviation pioneer Hawley Bowlus, the Bowlus Road Chief holds a special place in American travel history as the world’s first aluminum travel trailer. Inspired by aircraft fuselages, its lightweight, aerodynamic design later influenced Airstream and helped define what a modern travel trailer would become. This beautifully restored 1936 Bowlus is a rare example of that legacy brought back to life.

One of only seven mid-kitchen Bowlus Road Chiefs ever built, this trailer features a distinctive layout that separates the front and rear lounge areas, creating an intimate and cozy interior. Both spaces convert to sleeping areas, making it as functional as it is charming. Measuring 18½ feet long with a surprisingly spacious 6’1” interior height, the trailer weighs just over 1,100 pounds, making it easy to tow and even maneuver by hand.

The trailer has undergone a meticulous, frame-off restoration by Flyte Camp, their fifth Bowlus project to date, and it is now for sale. Great care was taken to preserve original features while elevating the interior with refined materials and craftsmanship. Polished aluminum cabinetry, rich walnut woodwork, custom hardwood flooring with metal detailing, copper accents, and luxurious wool upholstery all work together to create a warm, timeless interior that feels both authentic and indulgent.

The mid-kitchen remains true to the original design, complete with restored period fixtures, polished aluminum countertops, vintage cooktop, original sink, and icebox. Thoughtful details like cross-ventilation windows, open shelving, and restored 12-volt lighting add both beauty and practicality. Throughout the trailer, charming touches such as magazine racks, cozy dinettes, a small front sofa, and ample storage make the space feel inviting and livable.

Original elements unique to this 1936 model, including the restored roof rack with a double-sided awning and the original front water closet, further enhance its rarity and appeal. While fully restored, the exterior retains subtle imperfections that honor its nearly 90-year history, preserving the character and story of this remarkable trailer.

Simple, elegant, and historically significant, this 1936 Bowlus Road Chief is more than a travel trailer. It’s a rolling piece of American design history and a stunning addition to any classic-car or vintage-trailer collection. Click here for more information about acquiring this trailer.
