1964 Eriba Familia and 1963 VW Ragtop

In 2007, Everett Giebler was casually browsing German eBay when he stumbled upon something special—a 1964 Eriba Familia trailer. These compact, lightweight European trailers were a rare find in the U.S., and this particular one was calling his name. He quickly contacted his cousin in Germany to place a bid. Once the auction was won, the little Eriba was transported to Belgium and then shipped across the Atlantic to its new home in California.

Everett and his wife Sally had already restored a beautiful 1963 Ragtop Volkswagen Beetle, so when the Eriba arrived, it felt like destiny. The two vehicles were made for each other. Weighing only 560 kilos (around 1,200 pounds), the Eriba was light enough to be towed with the VW with ease—turning heads wherever they go.

Eriba trailers, originally manufactured by Hymer in Germany starting in the late 1950s, are known for their aerodynamic design and pop-top roofs. The most iconic model, the Eriba Puck, was beloved by European campers for its simplicity, lightweight frame, and the ability to be pulled by small cars, especially Volkswagens. VW and Eriba became a natural pair in the camping world, with the Beetle, Bus, or even the Squareback commonly seen towing these charming trailers across the countryside. The Puck and Familia models became symbols of practical, stylish European travel.

The Gieblers’ setup taps perfectly into that legacy. With its classic two-tone paint and compact frame, the 1964 Eriba looks right at home behind the mint-condition ’63 Ragtop. Whether they’re pulling into a campground or attending a vintage trailer rally, their duo never fails to spark conversations and admiration from fellow enthusiasts.

But the story doesn’t end when the trailer is parked. At home, the little Eriba has a special place in the Gieblers’ garage. Even when they’re not traveling, Everett and Sally often step inside to relax, listen to music, and enjoy a cup of coffee and fresh rolls. It’s a cozy escape from everyday life—a tiny rolling retreat that brings them joy, whether it’s on the road or sitting still.

Their passion for vintage vehicles, combined with their eye for matching design and attention to detail, captures the spirit of the vintage camping lifestyle. It’s not just about the destination—it’s about savoring the journey, the craftsmanship, and the community that comes with it.

Thank you to the Giebler family for sharing your one-of-a-kind vintage combo. Your story is a reminder of how classic trailers and timeless cars continue to bring joy and connection to a new generation of adventurers.
